San Juan is the capital and largest city in Puerto Rico, an archipelago approximately 1,000 miles southeast of Florida. A self-governing unincorporated territory of the United States, Puerto Rico is known as "La Isla del Encanto," which translates into "The Island of Enchantment."

Primarily a mountainous island, Puerto Rico has large coastal areas in the north and south. The average temperature is 82 degrees Fahrenheit, remaining fairly constant through the year despite the seasons. Both English and Spanish are official languages of Puerto Rico. Along with the obvious tropical tourist activities, Puerto Rico has many historic military forts such as the Fort de San Felipe del Morro overlooking San Juan Bay. The Arecibo Ionospheric Observatory, located approximately 100 kilometers from San Juan, studies radio emissions from distant galaxies and is the home base for NASA's SETI program (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence). This radio telescope, the largest of its kind, measures 305 meters in diameter and was featured in Goldeneye, Contact, and The X-Files.
