After a heartbreaking finish in the finals two years ago, Greece went one step further this weekend to take home the trophies and the honor of being the 2016 World Magic Cup champions!
2016 World Magic Cup
Top 8 Coverage
In a year featuring multiple powerhouse teams and returning champions, and in a Top 8 that highlighted the returning returning winners, it was the story of redemption that reigned supreme as Team Greece's time finally came.
After a heartbreaking loss in 2014 against Team Denmark, a game featuring a rough series of drawsall summarized by what has become known as the "Daneblast" that ended the tournament, Greece came to this event with a fire that would not be quenched by anything short of a win. Captained by Bill Chronopoulos, the captain from the 2014 team that got so close, he and his teammates of Petros Tziotis, Panagiotis Papdopoulos, and Nikolaos Kaponis conquered tough opponents all weekend before meeting Team Belgium in the finals.
There, they swept the team that came into Sunday as the first seed in explosive fashion, with Bill Chronopoulos sealing the win himself in his match against Jerome Bastogne on the back of a massive Conflagrate.
After two years, Greece's time has finally come, and they will be returning home as the 2016 World Magic Cup champions. Congratulations to Team Greece on their amazing performance!
