Jacob Van Lunen began playing Magic in 1995. He has participated in organized play at every level of competition and was a member of the winning team at Pro Tour San Diego in 2007, thanks to an innovative draft strategy. "So you'll draw three and I'll put two back?" Coming into The Legacy Championship, people expected a lot of Treasure Cruise, White Weenie variants, Elves, and control strategies, but Legacy is a crazy format where virtually anything is possible. Let's talk about some of the strangest cards and interactions we've seen today.

Time and time again we've seen Notion Thief create veritable blowouts against Brainstorm, Treasure Cruise, and Jace, the Mind Sculptor.

In round one, (7) Ari Lax, last year's winner, found himself quickly in the losers' bracket after facing off against Thragtusk, Consecrated Sphinx, and Frost Titan.

In round two, (20) Shahar Shenhar, playing a Death and Taxes White Weenie variant, was paired against a Reanimator deck. Shahar felt good about the game with Grafdigger's Cage in play, but he decided to turn the screws a bit more with Rest in Peace. Unfortunately for the reigning World Champion, his opponent had Helm of Obedience. Shenhar's Rest in Peace turned his opponent's Helm of Obedience into a lethal play!

In round four, Ashok Chitturi found himself facing down a turn one Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker off of a combination of rituals including Seething Song.

Right now, there's a Veteran Explorer/Scapeshift deck that's still undefeated.

The discard laden decks of the pre-Khans of Tarkir Legacy kept everyone honest, but those decks have become much worse with Treasure Cruise in the format. Now, it's looking like players will have the opportunity to experiment with new cards and take their curves much high than in previous Legacy formats.

Has Treasure Cruise ushered in a new era of Legacy? Will we start seeing more expensive spells and more unique strategies now that targeted discard is much weaker? Only time will tell. Stay tuned for continuing coverage of Eternal Weekend from here in Philadelphia!
