TOP 8 COVERAGE
It was an incredible Top 8 here in the golden state. Legacy specialists Joe Lossett and Javier Dominguez got up there; Pascal Maynard scored his tenth Top 8; and 13-year-old Ethan Brown became the youngest Grand Prix finalist ever!
But in the end, all that was eclipsed by a single crazy turn in the third game of the finals. Facing down Cranial Plating, multiple Arcbound Ravagers and too many flying robots, Slutsky had his back against the wall. Even his Hurkyl's Recall seemed defensive at best. But he busted out 17 unblockable damage somehow to swing for the final points as the crowd in the tournament hall erupted in yells and applause.
Time and time again we are reminded that Modern is one of the most exciting formats in existence. And this weekend's mayhem brought it to the front of all of our minds again. I mean, how could it not? It islandwalked straight there.
DAY 2 COVERAGE
There is no marine layer this morning in Los Angeles. The sun is bright and shining down, and these players are beaming to get ready to battle again with their favorite Modern brews!
As usual, anything is possible in Modern. The bracket without a loss contains decks like Merfolk, Mono-Blue Tron, Blue-Black Mill, and Bant Eldrazi, along with more staple archetypes like Affinity, Jund, and the new hotness Jeskai Harbinger.
Simon Slutsky, Wesley Higbee, Toshiya Kanegawa, Daniel Goetschel, Gal Schlesinger, and Bryan De La Torre are the players at 9-0 right now. There the ones to gun for. But really, at the largest West-Coast Grand Prix, people have shown that they just wanna gun. Modern has provided the Magic world that is only limited by your imagination, and players have been using that to its fullest.
We’ll find out what will rise to the top by the end of the day. So tune in to twitch.tv/channelfireball who are beaming all the action from Los Angeles right into your computer tubes!
Let’s get to the action.

DAY 1 COVERAGE
Goodness gracious, Modern is awesome. It’s diverse, it’s powerful, and it’s fun. What other format could a Blue-Black Mill deck be 8-0-1? And while seated beside Affinity, Infect, Jund, Abzan, Jeskai, a bunch of Emrakul the Aeons Torn, and Matt Nass’s Green-White Tokens deck—which is basically a Standard deck with Birds of Paradise? Forget about it. Modern’s great.
Simon Slutsky, Wesley Higbee, Toshiya Kanegawa, Dan Goetschel, Gal Schlesinger and Bryan De La Torre are currently at 9-0. And for Schlesinger, it’s his first-ever Grand Prix! They’ve cut through the chaff to get to the wheat on the first day, and are hoping keep slicing through to the Top 8 tomorrow.
We’ll be streaming the whole megillah tomorrow starting at 9am Pacific time. Find it all here and at twitch.tv/channelfireball!
See you tomorrow!
