TOP 8 COVERAGE
Grand Prix Louisville began with more than 1,600 players competing for a shot at the title, but in the end it was Reid Duke that cut his way through the field and a loaded Top 8 to take down the title.
After a slow start, Duke reeled off a perfect 6-0 run on Sunday to even reach the Top 8, and then continued his hot streak throughout the elimination rounds. He may not have started the tournament perfectly, but a 9-0 run on Sunday is much more important than the same record on Saturday.
In a format marked by cards dating back to Magic’s origins, it was a pair of relative newcomers that met in the finals — a black-red Reanimator deck from finalist Andrew Sullano and Duke’s innovative Sultai deck featuring Leovold, Emissary of Trest.
In a Top 8 that featured Pro Tour champion Craig Wescoe and reigning world champ Brian Braun-Duin, it was fifth-ranked Duke who stood tallest, knocking off Cody Napier in the quarterfinals before squaring off with and defeating Braun-Duin in the semifinals. While Griselbrand did its work in one game of the finals, Duke’s clutch counterspells were enough to take down Game 3 and secure the trophy.
Congrats to Reid Duke, the 2017 Grand Prix Louisville champion!

Day 2 Coverage
The sun has dawned on a new day in Louisville, and it will set with a new Legacy champion crowned. Nearly 500 players have returned for Sunday competition at Grand Prix Louisville, and it’s going to be an exciting Day Two as players are dusting off their Brainstorms, Sneak Attacks, and Reanimates — while sleeving up some new ones in Leovold, Emissary of Trest, Recruiter of the Guard, and Sanctum Prelate — to play Legacy. The format consists of the most powerful cards in Magic’s history, and the first day of competition didn’t disappoint, with archetypes as varied as Dredge, Miracles, Reanimator, Elves, Sneak Attack, Storm and more making waves.
The World Champion sits at the top after nine rounds of competition. Brian Braun-Duin took on all challengers and emerged undefeated on Saturday, and he’ll lead the pack alongside Eric English, Fadi Hirmiz, Cody Napier and Jody Keith today.
The tournament has thus far lived up to the hype. What awaits us on the way to the Top 8? We’ll find out soon.
