TOP 8 COVERAGE
With a twist of color and style over the weekend prior’s winner, Jack Fogle brought Sultai Control – Charms, Tasigur, the Golden Fang and all – to bear at Grand Prix Memphis. After going undefeated out of the 1,076 players on Day 1, Fogle kept his footing through the 120 remaining on Day 2 to earn his first Grand Prix Top 8. Once there he marched through talented players such as seven-time Grand Prix Top 8 contender Alex Majlaton, former Player of the Year Brad Nelson, and Pro Tour Hall of Fame member Ben Stark to take home the trophy.
While White-Red Aggro decks and Abzan Control was the talk of the weekend, each bringing innovation like Stark’s maindeck Siege Outposts and Nelson’s sideboarded Fleecemain Lions, adding green to the Blue-Black Control recipe meant the careful deck again took the top prize of the weekend.
There’s just two weeks for players to prepare, plan, and adjust again before the next Standard Grand Prix showdown in Miami, or eschew the world of sixty cards for Fate Reforged/Khans of Tarkir Limited in Liverpool. DAY 2 COVERAGE
1,076 descended on Grand Prix Memphis, each bearing a Standard tune to share. With notes hitting all over the scales – everything from Nullify and Wild Slash to Crux of Fate and Valorous Stance – it was a cacophonous echo of effects from last weekend’s look in Seville.
Ultimately, just 120 struck a chord strong enough to return for Day 2 with a chorus of four finding unblemished scores: Jack Fogle, Alex Majlaton, Brad Nelson, and Wenzel Krautmann are all on the top cleft at 9-0.
Behind them lay several standouts ready to pitch their way to the top of the scales: Hall of Fame member number 22-ranked Ben Stark, Chris Fennell, number 24-ranked Craig Wescoe, and Andrew Baeckstrom feature highly with others like Josh McClain, number 19-ranked Seth Manfield, number 9-ranked Jacob Wilson, number 6-ranked World Champion Shahar Shenhar, and more well in range.
