Paired this round, with scores of 6-1, were Switzerland's Andreas Ganz and the world's current No. 14 Jacob Wilson from Canada. One more win would put either one of them into Day 2, while the loser would have just one more chance to claim his spot in Round 9.

Wilson was playing one of Modern's oldest mainstays in Birthing Pod, while Ganz had brought Jeskai Delver.

Game 1

Wilson had a quick turn-two Birthing Pod off of Noble Hierarch, which Ganz then offed with the help of Lightning Bolt. And indeed, the game continued to be a fight over creatures: Wilson cast Wall of Roots and turned it into an Eternal Witness before casting another Noble Hierarch, then lost both to Forked Bolt.

Another Wall of Roots-turned-Kitchen Finks was dispatched via Lightning Bolt-Snapcaster Mage-Lightning Bolt, but one Snapcaster Mage later Wilson turned the tables and cleared Ganz's side of the battlefield, for a change, with Orzhov Pontiff. Ganz restocked up on creatures with Young Pyromancer, Gitaxian Probe, and Forked Bolt, but again lost all when Murderous Redcap shot down the haunted Pyromancer.

Ganz had no follow-up but more and more lands, whereas Wilson—still sitting on just three lands—was only just getting started: Kitchen Finks, Siege Rhino, and Archangel of Thune finished Ganz in short order. After having drawn eight lands and no Treasure Cruise, Ganz was in no position to argue.

Game 2

Ganz kept an almost perfect hand of Delver of Secrets, Monastery Swiftspear, Gitaxian Probe, Serum Visions, Treasure Cruise, and lands to match, while Wilson, after a mulligan, had kept Wall of Roots, Sin Collector and four lands.

By turn two, Ganz had already attacked Wilson down to 14 with Swiftspear and Insectile Aberration, and Wilson's Windswept Heath made that 13. And the game continued to be a fight over life. All Wilson could do was summon a rather meek blocker in Wall of Roots, while a second Monastery Swiftspear and more Serum Visions brought him to 8. Wilson did have Abrupt Decay for Insectile Aberration but still fell to 6.
