DRAFTING WITH XU SU

Posted in GRAND PRIX SHANGHAI 2014 - COVERAGE - EVENTS on October 5, 2014

By Chapman Sim

Xu Su is one of the most experienced players in all of China. Ever since placing 2nd place at Chinese Nationals back in 2003, he never stopped garnering the respect of the local community. Today, he gets a shot at breaking into his very first Grand Prix Top 8.

Entering Pod 1 for the second draft with a 11-1 record, he would probably need only a win and a draw to secure his berth for the final draft of the day.

Xu Su

Booster One

Xu opened an unspectacular booster and went with War-Name Aspirant, quickly jumping into Mardu by picking Mardu Roughrider. He collected three of his five copies of Disowned Ancestor and was happy to receive Ponyback Brigade seventh. Now, if only he could pick up some support spells to go with the aggressive assortment of creatures.

Pink rhinos are a good reason to ally with the Mardu Horde.

Booster Two

A weak booster prompted Xu to select Ride Down from his second booster and he quickly snapped up Rush of Battle in anticipation of all the warriors that would follow. At this point, the player seated to his left happened to be in Mardu as well. His picks dried up quickly and wound up with only a handful of average playables.

One of the key cards to clear the path for his angry little men.

Booster Three

Bellowing Saddlebrute is one of the meanest creatures at its cost, so Xu had no qualms taking that. Retribution of the Ancients is a decent combo with the bunch of Disowned Ancestors he gathered. Mardu Charm and Rush of Battle were the key takeaways from this booster and he ended the booster drafts by picking some average morph creatures.

A decent combo with the Outlast creatures Xu’s got.

Download Arena Decklist

Despite Xu's concerns about his mana base and lack of bombs and removal, his fears were unfounded. Swiftly winning his first match and taking a draw in the next round, he is first of eight players to lock up a spot in the Top 8 Draft.

"I hope that I can do better in the Top 8 and win it for China!"
