After surviving nine rounds of Sealed Deck and six rounds of Booster Draft, these eight players are ready for the Top 8! As expected, a lot of big names rose to the top from among a stacked field. As the elimination rounds progress, let's get to know these talented players and have them share with us the best moments of their weekend.


Yam Wing Chun

Hometown: Hong Kong

Age: 25

Occupation: MTG Mint Card Pro Player

Day 1 Summary: 8 - 1 (3 byes). I played Black-Red Aggro and the best cards were Wanted Scoundrels and Pirate's Cutlass.

Day 2 Summary: 4 - 1 - 1. I drafted Red-White twice. In Draft 1, Imperial Aerosaur was my MVP. In Draft 2, my best cards were Plains and Mountains because the rest of the cards were terrible.

Did any particular card surprise you this weekend?

Fire Shrine Keeper. Lee Shi Tian and my other friends always made fun of me but the card has served me well whenever I played it.

What was your favorite memory of the weekend?

Having fun with my friends and teammates at the Marina Bay Carnival on Friday.

What was your best personal moment of 2017?

Bought 100 copies of Hazoret the Fervent and then made the Top 8 of a Pro Tour with Hazoret!


Tomoharu Saito

Hometown: Tokyo, Japan

Age: 34

Occupation: Hareruya CEO / Pro Player

Day 1 Summary: 9 - 0 (3 byes). Bishop's Soldier was the MVP in my Red-White deck.

Day 2 Summary: 3 - 2 - 1. I drafted White-Green Dinosaurs with Verdant Sun's Avatar but I went 1 - 2 with it. My next deck was Blue-Green splashing for Vraska, Relic Seeker. That deck was much better.

Did any particular card surprise you this weekend?

This is not an Ixalan card but the Japanese community said that my 9-0 photo looked like Hooting Mandrills. (Editor's Note: At Saito’s suggestion, we created a visual for your viewing pleasure.)

What was your favorite memory of the weekend?

I made 9 - 0 in Day One with a deck that's nothing special.

What was your best personal moment of 2017?

Many, many applications came in when I was building Team Hareruya Hopes and we had many new recruits from all over the world! I'm so happy that there are so many motivated Magic players who are happy to join us!


Kenta Harane

Hometown: Tokyo, Japan

Age: 29

Occupation: Hareruya Pro Player

Day 1 Summary: 7 - 2 (3 byes). I had two decks, Blue-Green splash Red, and Red-Green. Pirate's Cutlass was so good in both decks.

Day 2 Summary: 5 - 0 - 1, I won five in a row and then ID for Top 8. I drafted Red-Green Dinosaurs with Raging Swordtooth and then Black-Red Pirates with Fiery Cannonade.

Did any particular card surprise you this weekend?

Fiery Cannonade. I destroyed eight of my opponent's creatures with it.

What was your favorite memory of the weekend?

I managed to pick three Lightning-Rig Crew for my Pirates deck.

What was your best personal moment of 2017?

Winning the World Magic Cup.


Lim Zhong Yi

Hometown: Singapore

Age: 30+

Occupation: Self-Employed

Day 1 Summary: 8 - 1 (2 byes). I played a 5-Color deck with triple New Horizons.

Day 2 Summary: 4 - 1 - 1. I drafted White-Black Vampires both times and the best card was Anointed Deacon. In Pod 1, I also splashed red only for Charging Monstrosaur.

Not sure.

What was your favorite memory of the weekend?

Winning a game on turn five in Round 14.

What was your best personal moment of 2017?

I attended the World Magic Cup and I loved the beautiful beaches of Nice, France.


Gu Rong

Hometown: Yancheng, China

Occupation: MTG Sheep Pro Player

Day 1 Summary: 7 - 2 (2 byes). I had a Blue-Green deck and One With the Wind won me many games.

Day 2 Summary: 5 - 0 - 1. In Draft 1, I had a White-Black Vampires deck with Sanctum Seeker. In Draft 2, I had a four-color deck with Vraska, Relic Seeker.

Previous Magic Accomplishments: Competitor at Pro Tour Hour of Devastation.

Did any particular card surprise you this weekend?

One With the Wind. It's really good.

What was your favorite memory of the weekend?

I got the chance to play against Kelvin Chew.

What was your best personal moment of 2017?

My best moment of the weekend and of 2017 was the same. I am a super fan of Kelvin Chew and he is really, really a great player.


Pan Minxing

Hometown: Guangzhou, China

Age: 25

Day 1 Summary: 7 - 2 (2 byes) with a normal White-Black deck.

Day 2 Summary: 5 - 1. I drafted Black-White and Green-White and Pious Interdiction was very good both drafts.

Did any particular card surprise you this weekend?

Pious Interdiction. It's very useful in all white decks.

What was your favorite memory of the weekend?

Making the Top 8, of course!

What was your best personal moment of 2017?

I want to thank all my friends and the community of Freedom Card Shop and Kejin Wudi Card Shop for their support because they are part of the reason I did well this weekend.


Shuhei Nakamura

Day 1 Summary: 8 - 1 (3 byes). White-Black splashing for Vraska, Relic Seeker.

Day 2 Summary: 4 - 2. I made 2 - 1 in both my drafts. The first one was Blue-Green Merfolk with Deeproot Waters. The second one was Red-White with a couple of Imperial Aerosaurs.

I'm really happy that the National Championship is back!

Day 1 Summary: 8 - 1 (1 bye). Daring Saboteur was the best card in my Blue-Black Pirates deck.

Day 2 Summary: 4 - 2. I drafted Red-White Aggro and White-Black Vampires.

Daring Saboteur! It gave me a lot of free wins.

What was your favorite memory of the weekend?

Spending time with all my friends and sharing stories of our trip to Singapore.

What was your best personal moment of 2017?

The last round of Swiss was very memorable. My opponent had Hostage Taker and Vona, Butcher of Magan. Somehow, I managed to stabilise and eventually win with Skyblade of the Legion and Prying Blade. If I had lost that game I would have not made Top 8.
