Draft 2 Terry Tung Yi Cheng

Tung Yi Cheng is probably best known in Magic for drawing a Bonfire of the Damned against Team USA at the World Magic Cup two years ago. We even included an animated .gif of it in the coverage yesterday, but posting it a second time might be unnecessarily cruel to Brian Kibler, so we'll leave it be, for now.

Cheng came into the second draft at 10-2 and needing at least two wins and a draw to make top 8.

Pick 1, pack 1, he was faced with the following:

  • Feral Incarnation
  • Forge Devil
  • Gravedigger
  • Spirit Bonds
  • Triplicate Spirits

Almost everyone we spoke to here this weekend agreed that Triplicate Spirits is the best common in this set for limited play, and Cheng clearly seemed to agree with them, moving it quickly to the front of the pack. However, Spirit Bonds also drew his attention, which created a dilemma: shipping one or the other downstream might suggest to that player that white is open, and create a conflict of interest for Cheng in pack two. In the end, he decided on the Spirit Bonds, and followed it up with a Welkin Tern.

Pack 1, pick 3 had no white or blue cards of note, causing Cheng to grimace visibly in his chair. I mean, I was standing behind him, and I could still tell his face was a picture of pain. He selected a Flesh to Dust over an Inferno Fist, and followed it with a Typhoid Rats, and a Rotfeaster Maggot, each of which were drafted quite quickly and decisively.

I asked Cheng after the draft about his move into black, and he explained that Rats and the Maggot were key in stabilizing a game. The Rats are functional removal, and the Maggot often produced a noticeable life swing as it entered play, as well as being the right size for keeping enemies at bay.

The second pack was not kind to Cheng, who first picked a Heat Ray that ended up in his sideboard. By the time the players were readying to crack their third packs, Cheng's deck was in need of a miracle.

But if anyone is good at Miracles, it's the guy who has an animated .gif of himself drawing one. Pack 3, pick 1 gave Cheng a Spectral Ward, followed by a Soul of Theros.

As Cheng assembled his deck, I asked him if he thought it was capable of getting him to the top 8. "If I'm lucky," he replied with a smile.

Tung Yi Cheng would like to get lucky.
