第八版入りのオデッセイ＝オンスロートというスタンダードフォーマットをめぐる結論はもう出てしまったといえるのかもしれない。世界最高峰のプレイヤーたちが持ち寄ったデッキはたった4つに絞り込まれ、そのうちの3つまでもが《ミラーリの目覚め/Mirari's Wake》デッキであるという状況なのだ。
ただ一人生き残った「青緑」、Dave Humpherysはどのようなパフォーマンスを見せてくれるであろうか。
Game 1
《クローサの境界/Krosan Verge》を2連続でセットするスタ－トだった先手Zink。Humpherysは第2ターンに《アクアミーバ/Aquamoeba》をプレイ。
3ターン目に《野生の雑種犬/Wild Mongrel》をHumpherysが展開すると、そのエンドステップに《クローサの境界/Krosan Verge》を起動。第4ターンもZinkがDraw-Goとして、Humpherysが返すターンに《物静かな思索/Quiet Speculation》。Zinkはレスポンスで《新たな信仰/Renewed Faith》をサイクリングするも、これが通る。
ここでHumph博士が墓地に仕込んだのは2枚の《ワームの咆哮/Roar of the Wurm》と《天啓の光/Ray of Revelation》だった。
Zinkは2枚目の《クローサの境界/Krosan Verge》も起動して、第5ターンにして7マナに到達。ここで《ミラーリの目覚め/Mirari's Wake》をプレイしつつ自分に《綿密な分析/Deep Analysis》を使用した。
一方のHumphは墓地の《天啓の光/Ray of Revelation》をフラッシュバックして《ミラーリの目覚め》を破壊。自ターンにはさらに墓地の《ワームの咆哮/Roar of the Wurm》もフラッシュバックした。
アタッカーが2体となったため、Zinkは満を持して《神の怒り/Wrath of God》。これによって盤上を一掃してから《綿密な分析/Deep Analysis》フラッシュバックをキャスト。このペイライフでライフが12となった。
Humpherysは墓地からもう一枚の《ワームの咆哮/Roar of the Wurm》をプレイしてターンを返し、一方のZinkは《ミラーリの目覚め/Mirari's Wake》から《強制/Compulsion》をプレイと続けた。
Humpherysは《入念な研究/Careful Study》をプレイしてからワームトークンをレッドゾーンへと送り込み、ここでZinkが《復讐に燃えた夢/Vengeful Dreams》X=1をプレイ。Humphはこれを《堂々巡り/Circular Logic》し、Zinkのライフは6に。
Zinkはフェッチランドを起動してライフが5。ここから《強制/Compulsion》を起動してハンドを回転させ、《神の怒り/Wrath of God》をプレイした。そして、これが通る。
ダメージクロックを失ってしまったHumpherysは《入念な研究/Careful Study》からマッドネスの《日を浴びるルートワラ/Basking Rootwalla》をプレイして、なんとか最後の5点を削りきろうと画策した。しかし、ZinkはX=13で《正義の命令/Decree of Justice》をサイクリング。

先攻となったHumphはテイクマリガンスタートながら2ターン目に《野生の雑種犬/Wild Mongrel》という立ち上がり。3ターン目にこれをパンプアップしてのアタックを敢行した。しかし、マッドネスで召喚を試みた《尊大なワーム/Arrogant Wurm》は《マナ漏出/Mana Leak》によってカウンターされてしまう。
対するZinkは《クローサの境界/Krosan Verge》でマナ基盤を整備しつつ《強制/Compulsion》をプレイ。Humphは2体目の《野生の雑種犬/Wild Mongrel》をプレイして2体でのダメージクロックを作ろうと試みた。
しかし、一度は《一瞬の平和/Moment's Peace》によって防がれてしまい、二度目は《狡猾な願い/Cunning Wish》からの《翼の破片/Wing Shards》で二匹とも除去という憂き目にあってしまう。
攻め手を失ってしまうことがイコール敗北を意味するHumphは《物静かな思索/Quiet Speculation》で墓地に《天啓の光/Ray of Revelation》と2枚の《ワームの咆哮/Roar of the Wurm》を仕込み、さっそくこの《天啓の光/Ray of Revelation》で《強制/Compulsion》を破壊。さらに《アクアミーバ/Aquamoeba》を召喚してターンを終えた。
一方のZinkは《綿密な分析/Deep Analysis》を表裏でプレイしてハンドを増やしてターンエンド。Humphもなんとかさらなる攻め手を増やそうと《入念な研究/Careful Study》をプレイし、先ほど墓地に埋め込んだ《ワームの咆哮/Roar of the Wurm》をフラッシュバックした。Zinkはここで二枚目の《神の怒り/Wrath of God》。
返すターン、Humphはここで引き当てた《ナントゥーコ自警団/Nantuko Vigilante》で《強制/Compulsion》を破壊。ZinkがDraw-Goだったためにさっそくこの《ナントゥーコ自警団/Nantuko Vigilante》が次のターンにレッドゾーンに。
Zinkはこのアタックを狙い済まして《狡猾な願い/Cunning Wish》。持ってきた《狩り立てる群れ/Hunting Pack》をストーム＝１でプレイした。
4/4クリーチャーが2体降臨し、《自警団》を一方的に葬り去る。
そして、続くターンからはレッドゾーンを我が物顔で闊歩していった。
そう、彼らはブロッカーであると同時にゲームを終わらせるクロックなのだ。

先攻Humph、ノンランドマリガン。
《島/Island》4＋《不可思議/Wonder》2、ダブルマリガン。
ノンランド、トリプルマリガン...。
そして、
《島/Island》＋《森/Forest》＋《綿密な分析/Deep Analysis》＋《不可思議/Wonder》
これをKEEP。
なんとか3枚目の土地として《島/Island》を引き当てたHumphは第3ターンに《物静かな思索/Quiet Speculation》をキャスト。《ワームの咆哮/Roar of the Wurm》、《天啓の光/Ray of Revelation》、《綿密な分析/Deep Analysis》が墓地に送り込まれた。
Zinkはやはり《クローサの境界/Krosan Verge》を起動してマナベースを整えつつのDraw Goがひたすら続く。Humphのフラッシュバックでの《綿密な分析/Deep Analysis》を《マナ漏出/Mana Leak》し、続くターンも淡々とDraw,Set,GO。
Humpherysは続くメインステップに《綿密な分析/Deep Analysis》をハンドからプレイ。これは通る。そして続くターンもZinkはDraw,Set,Go。Humphは《綿密な分析/Deep Analysis》をフラッシュバックでプレイしてから《野生の雑種犬/Wild Mongrel》を召喚してターンエンド。
これをZinkは《神の怒り/Wrath of God》。それに対してHumphはサイドカードである《被覆/Envelop》。これをZinkが《マナ漏出/Mana Leak》で撃退、と久々に見るカウンター合戦だ。
アタッカーを失ってしまったHumphは続くターンにも《野生の雑種犬/Wild Mongrel》を召喚。これに対してもZinkは《神の怒り/Wrath of God》。
ならば、とさらにHumpherysは《尊大なワーム/Arrogant Wurm》をプレイ。これはカウンターされることもなく、Zinkは《変異/Morph》でクリーチャーを展開して対抗した。
ところで、この《変異/Morph》は紛れもなく《賛美されし天使/Exalted Angel》である。デッキリストが公開されている手前もあってブラフもなにもあったものではない。
《ミラーリの目覚め/Mirari's Wake》と《ミラーリ/Mirari》をすべてサイドアウトしたことからもわかるように、Zinkのデッキはもはやカウンター天使・正義パーミッションなのである。
たまらずHumphは墓地の《ワームの咆哮/Roar of the Wurm》をプレイし、手札から《不可思議/Wonder》を召喚して頭数を3体に増やしてターンをかえした。
Zinkは一度《賛美されし天使/Exalted Angel》でアタックしてから、盤面を《神の怒り/Wrath of God》で一掃。X=7で《正義の命令/Decree of Justice》をサイクリングしたのだった。
Humpherysもトリプルマリガンとは思えないほどの粘り腰を見せた。
しかし、ドイツの若きプレイヤーが地元での決勝戦へと勝ち進むのをとめられなかったのだった。
