現役バリバリのプロプレイヤーと、「タイムシフトプレイヤー」の対決が再び催される。
現在Player of the Yearレース暫定首位の八十岡については、すでに多くの記事と場面によって語られている部分が多いのでここでは細かな説明は省かせて頂く。一方で、Brian Hegstadという名前に聞き覚えはあるだろうか？
彼は、2001年のプロツアー東京において、インベイジョンブロック構築のステロイド軍団、いわゆる"ABU（Alpha Beta Unlimited.com）"のメンバーであり、その頃のナショナルチームとしても活躍していた。ところが、ここ数年その名を耳にすることは無く、この神戸で数年ぶりに表舞台に舞い戻ってきたのだ。
初日の岡本 尋（愛知）を始め、ラウンド11終了時点で10勝1敗の射場本 正巳（東京）ら、「タイムシフトプレイヤー」の活躍の目立つ今大会。「タイムシフト」とは、決して悠久の幻などではなく、確かな力として現代に存在しているのだから。そう、幾多のタイムシフトカードが大活躍を見せているように。
強力な「ほぼ白単」の赤白をドラフトしたHegstedもまた、その看板に名を連ねる1人なのである。
Game 1
4枚投入されている、《ヴィセリッドの深み歩き/Viscerid Deepwalker》待機からスタートの八十岡。さらに《灰毛皮の熊/Ashcoat Bear》→変異（《水深の予見者/Fathom Seer》）と美しく展開し、いくらドローしても土地しか見えないHegstadは、八十岡が土地をバウンスすると、そのままカードを畳み出した。

Game 2
《象牙の巨人/Ivory Giant》待機でスタートしたHegstad。今度は《ヴィセリッドの深み歩き》こそ無かった八十岡だが、《コー追われの物あさり/Looter il-Kor》プレイで先の展開を占い、少し遅れたが《ヴィセリッドの深み歩き》を待機で送り込む。
ただ、Hegstadとて、いつまでもサンドバッグではない。《永遠からの引き抜き/Pull from Eternity》で《ヴィセリッドの深み歩き》を叩き落すと、《コー追われの物あさり》には《アイケイシアの投槍兵/Icatian Javelineers》。これは《狩りの興奮/Thrill of the Hunt》でかわすものの、《遍歴の宿命語り/Errant Doomsayers》がその歩みに待ったをかけ、《ベナリアの騎兵/Benalish Cavalry》がビートダウンを続ける。
《水深の予見者/Fathom Seer》を表返して手札を補充し、さらに変異クリーチャーと《灰毛皮の熊/Ashcoat Bear》を呼び込むが、待機の解けた《象牙の巨人》が待ち構えており、お供となるHegstadのクリーチャーは、6体全てが白という徹底ぶり。ここで大ダメージが八十岡を襲い、マナこそ伸びないが、ドローがことごとくウィニークリーチャーというHegstadは、この機を逃すなとばかりに一気の攻めを見せる。
《サリッドの殻住まい/Thallid Shell-Dweller》と《遍歴のカゲロウ獣/Errant Ephemeron》待機と展開し、まずは守りを整えて反撃のチャンスをうかがう八十岡だが、《水深の予見者》のフェイスアップが響いてどうにもマナが足りない。そうしている間にも、《アムローの求道者/Amrou Seekers》《ヴェク追われの盲信者/Zealot il-Vec》が八十岡のライフをじわりじわりと締め付けており、結局最後までそれが覆る事はなかった。

Game 3
《ダスクライダーの大隼/Duskrider Peregrine》待機に対して、《灰毛皮の熊/Ashcoat Bear》を瞬速プレイから《石灰の池/Calciform Pools》を経由しての《ヴィセリッドの深み歩き》待機、《暗影の蜘蛛/Penumbra Spider》と続ける八十岡。《島/Island》こそ無いが、十分な動きだ。
だが、それを上回るのが「白単」と化したHegstadのビートダウンだ。
解放された《ダスクライダーの大隼》、《雲を追うケストレル/Cloudchaser Kestrel》《騎兵戦の達人/Cavalry Master》《ザルファーの指揮官/Zhalfirin Commander》と攻め立て、邪魔な《暗影の蜘蛛》には《時間の孤立/Temporal Isolation》で名実共に孤立を強要。
《ザルファーの指揮官》のバックアップを得て、フルアタックを繰り返すHegstad。八十岡が次のドローに期待して全軍攻撃を返した後、Hegstadがハンドから公開した《補強/Fortify》を確認すると、握手をもって互いの健闘を称えた。
最後になったが、このテーブルの持つ意味を説明していなかったので追記しておくが、負けた方は、ほぼ日曜日進出の目が無くなるというラインでのマッチアップだった。
痛恨の2連敗で、八十岡のプロツアー連覇という偉業は、限りなく遠くなってしまった。果たして、奇跡はあるのだろうか。
