プレビュー・カードの中には、すぐにでもデッキに入れてそのスゴさをみんなに褒めてもらいたがっているやつがいる。その一方で、じっくりと考えてもらいたいやつもいる。そういうカードはしばしば驚くほど強かったりするものだけど、「実はこんなにクールなものだったのか」と気づくにはよく観察しなくちゃいけない。
どうぞ、ゆっくり見てくれ！
《ガラクの仲間》という頼もしいカードがある。２マナで３/２というサイズだけでも、とても頼りになるよね。こいつは、ゲームの早い段階からビート・ダウンを始めるチャンスを作ってくれる。それから、対戦相手が（「変異」や「予示」とか何かで）２/２のクリーチャーを繰り出してきても、そいつと相討ちしつつダメージも与えてくれる。そもそもトランプルがあるおかげで強化をためらわずにできるから、相手に１点だけ与えてそのまま退場なんてことはなさそうだ。
〈毅然さの化身〉はそんな《ガラクの仲間》と同じコストで同じサイズを持ち、さらに到達まで加わった優秀なやつだ。この到達のおかげで、こいつは《ガラクの仲間》とは違ったプランを取ることもできる。《ガラクの仲間》は可能な限り毎ターン攻撃に向かうのに対し、〈毅然さの化身〉は飛行ビートダウンの序盤を抑える役目も果たせるんだ。飛行ビートを使う対戦相手は、序盤に１/１のスピリットや鳥を展開して小さなダメージを重ねてくるけれど、これでもう問題ないね。《ガラクの仲間》と異なり、〈毅然さの化身〉は序盤の攻撃と防御をどちらもこなしてくれるんだ。
ただ、複数のプレイヤーとカジュアルで戦うと、どうしてもゲームが長引きがちになる。１時間も２時間も続くゲームの「序盤」は、せいぜい最初の10分程度だ。軽い３/２のクリーチャーは悪くないけれど、デッキを組んでいくうちに抜けていくことが多くなるだろう。長いゲームでは期待に沿った活躍はできないんだ。〈毅然さの化身〉もゲーム後半、ドラゴンをチャンプ・ブロックすることはできるかもしれない。でもそれだけじゃもの足りないかな。
でも〈毅然さの化身〉は、それだけじゃないんだ。
この「毅然としたやつ」は、ゲームが進むにつれてサイズを上げることのできる、特別な１枚だ。２ターン目か３ターン目にこいつをプレイすれば、到達とトランプルを持った３/２が対戦相手たちを苦しめるだろう。ブロックや除去の準備ができていないうちに、９点か10点のダメージを稼ぎ出すはずさ。ゲーム中盤では、こちらも+１/+１カウンターの置かれたクリーチャーをいくつか持っているだろうから、〈毅然さの化身〉にも５/４くらいのサイズが期待できる。〈毅然さの化身〉はゲーム終盤に向かって盤面に「横の強さ」をもたらし、また同時に「縦の強さ」も用意できるんだ（脚注１。８/７トランプル、到達にでもなれば、攻撃でも防御でもお任せあれって感じだね。
弱いところ
大きな問題は、〈毅然さの化身〉がどれだけサイズを上げられるのか、という点だ。こいつを《ガラクの仲間》より優れたものにするには、他にクリーチャーが必要で、そいつに+１/+１カウンターが置かれている必要がある。その力を引き出すために、ふたつの制限があるわけだね。さらにそれだけでなく、順番も大切だ。クリーチャーを引き込むより先に+１/+１カウンターを与えるカードを手に入れても、役に立たない。クリーチャーを展開して、そこに+１/+１カウンターを置き、それから〈毅然さの化身〉を唱える、という動きが必要になるんだ。さらにその後も、対戦相手が全体除去を使わないことが前提になるし、あるいは自軍を守る手段が必要になるだろう。こうして挙げれば挙げるほど、こいつが期待通りの活躍を見せてくれる見込みは少なくなっていくように感じちゃうね。
さてそれなら、どうやって〈毅然さの化身〉を売り込もうか？ +１/+１カウンターが置かれたクリーチャーが５体いるなら、その有利をもっと引き出し続けてさらに有利になってやろうじゃないか。
強いところ
〈毅然さの化身〉はどんなデッキにも入るカードじゃないけれど、みんなが考えるより多くのデッキで活躍するものなんだ。様々なセットが登場するたびに、クリーチャーに+１/+１カウンターを置くカードは増えている。直接的に「対象のクリーチャーに+１/+１カウンターを１個置く」って書いてあるカードを除いても、クリーチャーに+１/+１カウンターを置く効果を持つ能力はいくつもあるんだ。「鼓舞」、「進化」、「補強」、「増幅」、「狂喜」、「移植」、「貪食」、「不死」、「活用」、「解鎖」。+１/+１カウンターを扱う方法は、どんどん多くなっているね。みんなも+１/+１カウンターを扱う機会が多くなっているんじゃないかな。
「縦の強さ」も「横の強さ」も両方持てるというのは、はっきり言って貴重だ。大抵のプレイヤーはそのどちらかには対処できるようにしているけど、両方とも手をつけられるのは稀なんだ。対戦相手がふたつの脅威への対応に追われるって展開は、きっと楽しいだろう。
毅然としたやつとその仲間たち
それじゃあ、どうすれば〈毅然さの化身〉の力を最大限発揮させられるだろう？ 僕としては、今なお「報復」の機会を狙っているゼンディカーのあいつと組ませるのが良いんじゃないかなと思っている。《ゼンディカーの報復者》は大量の植物を連れてきて、それから土地を１枚出すだけでそのすべてが〈毅然さの化身〉が求める+１/+１カウンターを得る。《ゼンディカーの報復者》はそれ単体でも有力だけれど、こいつは〈毅然さの化身〉を決して無視できない戦力にしてくれるんだ。
他に〈毅然さの化身〉と一緒に使いたいのは、『統率者（2014年版）』から《森の捧げ物》だ。《森の捧げ物》は、すぐにでも強化できるエルフの大群を生み出してくれる。《白の太陽の頂点》でも同じ働きが期待できるけれど、白マナ・シンボルが３つもあるものよりは〈毅然さの化身〉と同じ色のものを使った方がいいかな。インスタント・タイミングで使えるのは素晴らしいけどね。
プレインズウォーカーのアジャニは〈毅然さの化身〉ときっと良い友達になれるだろう。《不動のアジャニ》と《黄金のたてがみのアジャニ》はどちらも、すべてのクリーチャーに+１/+１カウンターを置くことができる。それから《英雄の導師、アジャニ》も、一度に３体のクリーチャーに置けるね。
他の「戦場に出たとき」に能力が誘発するカードと同様に、〈毅然さの化身〉も《狙い澄ましの航海士》との相性が良い。ゲーム序盤に〈毅然さの化身〉をプレイしていたら、その後でさらに大きくなれるタイミングで《狙い澄ましの航海士》と「結魂」して「明滅」させることができるんだ。
もう少し新しいカードを使いたいなら、「鼓舞」メカニズムに注目してくれ。１/１のトークンが何体か戦場にあれば、「鼓舞」するたびに+１/+１カウンターが置かれたクリーチャーが増えていく。
で７/６トランプルのクリーチャーを手にするのも、そう多くターンはかからないはずさ。
さていくつかのアイデアを出したところで、〈毅然さの化身〉のために組んだデッキリストを見てみてくれ。

このデッキには、先ほど言った《ゼンディカーの報復者》と《森の捧げ物》が採用されている。それから《キイェルドーの王、ダリアン》も入れることにした。《キイェルドーの王、ダリアン》は兵士徴用の達人で、盤面を素早く築いてくれる。手に負えない状況に陥ったら、Ｘの値を大きくして《軍部政変》を放ち、盤面を一掃した後に兵士を残そう。
クリーチャーに+１/+１カウンターを置く手段もいくつか追加した。《月皇ミケウス》はタップで他のクリーチャーに+１/+１カウンターを置き、極めて速く〈毅然さの化身〉のサイズが大きくなる状況を作ってくれる。《不屈のダガタール》は、+１/+１カウンターを必要なところに移すことができる。さらに、こいつは対戦相手のクリーチャーから+１/+１カウンターを奪い、こちらのクリーチャーに与えることもできるんだ。《永遠のドロモカ》は強烈な「鼓舞」を持っている。そして中でも僕のお気に入りは、《忘れられた古霊》だ。多人数戦で有力な《忘れられた古霊》は、もの凄い速さで+１/+１カウンターを積み上げ、アップキープにそれを撒くことができる。《倍増の季節》も加われば、《忘れられた古霊》はあっという間にゲームを決めてくれるだろう。
《軍部政変》と《森の捧げ物》を使うためにも、素早く大量のマナを扱えるようにしたい。「進化」を持った《円環の賢者》と「鼓舞」を持った《荒野の地図作成》で、クリーチャーを強化しながらマナ基盤も強化できるだろう。
とはいえ、〈毅然さの化身〉は必ずしもこれを中心にデッキを組まなきゃいけないわけじゃない。こいつを手に入れたら、僕はすぐにでも《育殻組のヴォレル》デッキに入れてみるよ。このデッキはトークンと+１/+１カウンターを倍にしていくのを目指しているから、〈毅然さの化身〉はすんなり入ると思う。たまに序盤の守りを任せながら、ゲームを素早く決める脅威として期待しているよ。

「横の強さ」とは、大量のクリーチャー（通常は小型のもの）を並べている状態のことだ。「横の強さ」があれば、大型のクリーチャー１体か２体しかない相手に対して有効な攻撃ができる。こちらは何体かクリーチャーを失うものの、大きなダメージを与えられるんだ。「縦の強さ」は、それ単体で大きなダメージを与えられるクリーチャーを１体（か２体）持っている状態のことだ。つまり、15体のクリーチャー・トークンが並んでいたら「横の強さ」があり、《引き裂かれし永劫、エムラクール》は「縦の強さ」をもたらすわけだね。
