RULES & FORMATS
GET YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED
If you're not sure how something works, there’s help. If you haven’t already, take a look at the basic rules of the game. Once you get those under your belt, play a game or two to experience them in action firsthand. Then check out the Magic glossary for any game terms you might have missed.
There are lots of ways to play Magic, and each one is known as a format. Each play format has rules telling you which sets are okay to use in your decks, and if there are any special rules for the format, so be sure to consult them before playing.
BANNED AND RESTRICTED CARDS
Depending on the format you’re playing, certain cards might be banned or restricted in order to ensure a healthy play environment. We do this because a healthy environment has lots of viable and competitive deck styles, with no one deck (or card) completely dominating.
A comprehensive document outlining each facet of the rules became necessary. This document is known as Magic’s Comprehensive Rulebook. It’s meant to be consulted when specific rules questions come into play and neither the tournament’s organizers nor judges have the answer.
